Portland Homeowner's Solar Success: Kirk Krutsinger's Journey with Elemental Energy

For Kirk Krutsinger, going solar was about more than just saving on his electric bill. It was about powering his home, his future EV, and his electric bikes with clean energy, all while getting ahead of rising utility rates. His North Portland home is now a great example of what a thoughtfully designed solar and storage system can do.

Why Kirk Chose Solar for His North Portland Home

Like many Portland-area homeowners, Kirk was watching PGE rates climb and wanted to take control of his energy future. His motivations were split just about evenly between environmental impact and long-term savings.

With an all-electric home and plans to add an EV, Kirk knew his energy needs were only going to grow. He wanted a system designed not just for today, but for the way he planned to live tomorrow.

Elemental Energy's Tailored Solar Solution

Kirk's project was guided by solar consultant Allie Warnock, with Alec Sommer managing the account and Quinn Collins overseeing the project. Together, our team designed a system built to offset Kirk's current usage while leaving room for his future plans:

  • 10.32 kW solar system (24 Silfab 430 panels)
  • Three Enphase 5P batteries providing 15 kWh of total storage

The solar array was sized to accommodate Kirk's future EV, and the battery storage was added primarily for peace of mind and resilience against potential future outages.

Impressive Results: Energy Production and Savings

Kirk's system has delivered right in line with expectations, and then some:

  • Estimated production at time of sale: 10,100 kWh per year
  • Actual production over the last year: 10,500 kWh
  • Estimated production offset: 120 percent of previous usage
  • Estimated payback period: approximately 13 years, including the cost of his battery system and a conservative 4.5% annual utility rate increase. Larger rate increases only shorten that payback.

In his first year, Kirk had extra production to spare. Now that he is charging his EV at home, his production and usage are running just about even, which is exactly the kind of forward planning the system was designed for.

Kirk financed his project with a cash purchase and took advantage of both the Energy Trust of Oregon cash incentive and the federal tax credit available at the time of his installation.

Powering an All-Electric Life

One of the things Kirk is most excited about is being able to drive his new EV on 100 percent clean energy. His home now runs on the power his own system produces.

His battery storage has added another layer of value through the PGE Smart Battery Pilot, a program that lets him sell stored battery power back to the grid. It has been a nice way to help offset the cost of his battery while also supporting grid reliability. Kirk appreciates that he gets to choose whether to participate each time, usually with a full day's notice.

The peace of mind has been real, too. When his neighbors were talking about a recent power outage, Kirk's response said it all. As he put it, "What outage?" His system kept things running so smoothly he did not even notice.

Why Kirk Chose Elemental Energy

When Kirk was choosing a solar installer, a few things stood out. He appreciated our low-pressure approach, the high-quality equipment we offered, and the fact that Elemental Energy brought many years of experience to the table.

Throughout the process, Kirk found our team friendly, communicative, and well-informed. When a minor issue came up during the installation, our team resolved it right away. Kirk also opted for critter guard to protect his system, a smart choice given all the squirrels in his neighborhood.

"It's clear that Elemental Energy is thorough and stands by their work," Kirk shared.

A Word for Fellow Portland Homeowners

Kirk's advice for neighbors considering solar is simple: do not wait. Since he installed his system, PGE has raised rates twice, a 17 percent increase followed by an 8.5 percent increase. Every rate hike makes his decision look better and reinforces the value of locking in his own clean energy production.

He would happily recommend Elemental Energy to friends and neighbors.
